Sony hires Aaron Taylor-Johnson to play Kraven the Hunter

Aaron Taylor-Johnson gets the chance to double dip in Marvel’s garlic sauce. the Avengers: Age of Ultron star has signed on to play Kraven the Hunter in a film for Sony’s adjacent Spider-Man IP. According to VarietyTriple Frontier director JC Chandor will direct the film, from a screenplay by Richard Wenk, Art Marcum and Matt Holloway. Taylor-Johnson didn’t leave the MCU early enough, so it’s nice that he’s given a second chance, just like Chris Evans did with Johnny Storm and Captain America. And of course Quicksilver came back in Wanda Vision. It’s only fair that Taylor-Johnson gets her turn.

Kraven the Hunter is a hoot and a half. The character was created in 1964, a Russian “Great White Hunter” type who likes to kill animals with his bare hands. Remember it study that went viral last week about which animals you could take on in a fight? Kraven is the personification of him, but with a skintight animal print from head to toe. Kraven the Hunter was an OG member of the Sinister Six, a group of villains who came together to try and take down their shared enemy, Spider-Man. (The surprise of all surprises, they can’t.) As a legacy member of that group, Kraven made a brief cameo in Spider-Man: turn off the darkness. Specifically, he appears to have a cat’s head sprouting from his chest during “A Freak Like Me Needs Company.”

The lyrics of that song seem to suggest that instead of killing animals with his bare hands, he has sex with them? In any case, kraven the hunter is scheduled for a October 6, 2023 release.

Update March 9, 2022: Christopher Abbott (from Girls/George Clooney’s adaptation of 22 sacks to Hulu fame) will play the animal-loving antagonist Kraven’s bad boy. Since Spider-Man is a no-go for him Poison-verse, Sony had to dig deep for a badass partner to take on Kraven. Abbott will play The Foreigner, who sounds like an ’80s wrestler who lacks imagination. But he’s actually a mercenary with no superpowers aside from being very good at fighting. By term, Abbott’s Foreigner will join Alessandro Nivola as yet another antagonist in this truly smorgasbord of villain-on-villain violence.
